Aims of the Programme This is an interdisciplinary programme which is focused on developing excellent professional practice in a range of sport-related contexts. Students are engaged in modules that draw from a range of disciplines. A key feature of the programme is its focus on synthesising theory and practice in applied contexts. Areas of study include a wide range of topics on sport pedagogy (teaching and coaching), applied sport sciences (i.e. psychology, physiology, motor control), sport policy and management, and research methods. Modules across the school provide the opportunity to study in many areas from both scientific and applied perspectives, and there are increasing opportunities for choosing modules in the second and third year of studies. There is a strong focus on employment and employability in practical, professional, and academic sport-related fields. The programme is rooted in the core research strengths of the academic staff in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences; and staff are expected to be leaders in the emerging field of sport pedagogy.

For students who take the optional leadership modules to be awarded the MSci (with Leadership), the key aim is to develop students’ leadership skills and knowledge through a leadership study pathway in years 3 & 4.
