The module examines approaches to political construction of the “Middle East”, and thus US-Middle East relations, through the presentation of the region and its people in American film.
The course links theoretical approaches, such as “Orientalism” and the Other, to the history of US foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa through film's presentation and negotiation of the regions.
Case studies begin with the Sheik in the 1920s through the move from neutrality with Casablanca to issues such as the presentation of Israel, the framing of “terrorism”, and the US and the Middle East after 9/11.
