Aims of the Programme Drawing on the outstanding international reputation of CREES in research and teaching, this programme equips students with an in-depth understanding of the making of modern Russia - its history, its political, economic, social and cultural affairs. Students also gain a high level of proficiency in the Russian language, with options available in other Slavonic languages. At a time of unprecedented contact between Russia and the West, as with Western companies pouring significant investments into the Russian economy, and with Russia developing a new and important role for itself in the international community, graduates of Russian Studies are in much demand in business, government agencies, the EU, media and other fields. Students will not only emerge from the four-year degree with an impressive level of knowledge of Russia, but will also possess a range of valuable transferable skills, developed at all stages of the programme. Skills of independent learning, analysis, and research are developed from Stage I through Stage III, embedded in the various course options. This development of skills culminates in the dissertation that students produce in their final year, on the basis of independent research into a specialist topic.
