Aims of the Programme The programme aims to: Develop knowledge, understanding and skills in educators of deafblind (multi-sensory impaired) learners to work confidently and effectively in educational settings, with families and with other professionals. Develop skills in professional reflection to inform and improve current practice and to equip educators to work in a range of settings and contexts where deafblind learners are educated
Programme Outcomes

The implications of MSI for development and education and the issues surrounding the assessment of development in learners with MSI
The development of communication in learners with MSI, in relation to typical child development, and that of learners with other disabilities, and the range of assessments and strategies for assessing and developing communication, interaction and information in these learners, including those at very early stages of development
The range and use of alternative formats for promoting communication and information sharing in learners with MSI and the significance of communication difficulties for learning and development; including that of difficulties in behaviour
The functions of vision, hearing, and touch and other close senses and disorders of these senses caused by organic or perceptual deficits and the evaluation of these conditions by functional and clinical assessment
The implications of sensory difficulties for development and learning and for the provision of appropriate sensory environments
Course materials (text, video and Web-based); practical activities, tutorials and seminars, lectures/workshops/practical sessions web supported learning ¿ student exchange, resources links, tutorial support

Ability to choose and use a range of assessment tools and approaches in a wide context including in working with other professionals for the benefit of learners with MSI
Ability to provide effective programmes of learning and support for learners with MSI based on assessment and monitored for their efficacy to improve learner outcomes within a framework of high expectations
Ability to evaluate the use of technology and other equipment to minimise the effects of disability and to support learning
Professional attitudes in relation to multi-professional working, sharing information and resources, disseminating information and knowledge, as well as to continue to learn and develop with and from others
Ability to marry theory to practice and to evaluate research and other information for the benefit of learners with MSI
Practical project work alongside each module, practical activities in course materials, teaching placement with deafblind learners, self directed learning and student discussion including use of web based learning environment
