Description This module builds upon the fundamental principles of structure, reactivity and bonding introduced in Year 1 to develop a deeper understanding of the reactivity of organic molecules and how to harness this in the selective synthesis of complex molecules. Students learn how to bring all of these ideas together in the design of synthetic routes to complex organic molecules such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyestuffs and perfumes.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts associated with the material delivered in each area;
  • Apply their acquired knowledge to the solution of relevant unseen problems;
  • Apply their knowledge of reactions, mechanisms and retrosynthetic strategy to devise synthetic reaction sequences;
  • Apply their knowledge of reactions and mechanisms to rationalise observations and unfamiliar reaction sequences.
Assessment 33077-01 : Module Assessment : Exam (School Arranged) - Written Unseen (100%)
