Aims of the Programme To enable students to acquire knowledge and transferable skills in Biochemistry that equip them for useful employment within and beyond the biosciences and in particular to provide training and learning opportunities which prepare them for careers in research or other areas where there is a need to be fully aware of research methodologies and philosophy. To offer a sound basic training in scientific methods by means of courses that flourish because of cross-fertilization between teaching and research. To provide a course structure that allows students to delay their ultimate choice of specialisation as late as possible and switch effectively to related areas of biological, medical or biotechnological science as interests mature or change. The fourth year will provide in-depth training in research skills and methodologies and an extended opportunity to experience research in an appropriate area of Biochemistry at first hand.
Programme Outcomes

The fundamental biological principles at the heart of biochemistry including cell biology, genetics, enzymes, metabolism, physiology and development
The fundamental chemical principles and concepts including: inorganic, organic and physical chemistry of relevance to students of biochemistry
Genetic engineering, proteins and enzymes, biomembranes and bioenergetics, metabolism and cellular regulation at a more advanced level
A range of related biosciences disciplines such as, microbiology, molecular cell biology, medical biochemistry and genetics chosen to give the background and knowledge relevant to the students┬┐ specialised areas on interest
A specialist knowledge reflecting our current understanding of biochemistry in selected areas and the evidence on which it is based
Research methodology in the biosciences and how to apply it to a specific problem in biochemistry
Lectures, practical classes, workshops, tutorials, optional modules, guided reading, research seminars, extended research project, independent study
Written examinations and continuous assessment (including course tests, practical reports, data handling problem sheets, essays and presentations), extended project report, oral presentation, seminar summaries, reports of core concepts courses; extended project report with in-depth literature search and presentation and analysis of results
