Description

This linked module provides an introduction to economics for students not going on to specialise in the subject.  It provides students with an understanding of basic economic concepts, theories and principles. Topics covered include: supply and demand analysis, consumer and producer theory, market failure, externalities and public goods, non-market (government) failure and several special topics illustrating how economic analysis is carried out, such as crime and crime policy, marriage and divorce, factor markets and the distribution of income, inequality of income and wealth, poverty traps and welfare reform.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of these linked modules the students should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and an understanding of basic economic concepts, theories and principles;
  • interpret economic information presented in written, numerical and graphical form;
  • relate and apply appropriate theory to particular economic event, situation or phenomenon.
