Students may apply to undertake either an optional year abroad or an optional year in Computer Science between level I and H. Year Abroad: Students must attain a minimum overall average mark of 60 in order to be considered for study abroad. An optional year abroad at a university with which the University of Birmingham maintains an established relationship. Modules to be chosen from an approved list relevant to the Music programme. Modules will be selected in conjunction with the academic member of staff responsible for the programme, to ensure that they are at an appropriate level, that they do not duplicate our own provision, and that they contribute to the programme. If there is any duplication of our programme, the student will be ineligible to sit those modules on return to Birmingham. If the year abroad is passed the student's degree title will have 'with Year Abroad' added. With effect from the 2020-21 cohort, Year 2 will be weighted at 25% and final year at 75%. The Year Abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis only and it will not contribute to the final degree classification. The Year Abroad does not apply to students who enter via an articulation agreement. Year in Computer Science
Students must take 40 credits of independent study selected from the modules below. Independent Study modules: Students may take two 20 credit Independent Study modules in Music OR one 40 credit Special Subject module in Music Independent Study modules: OR Independent Study modules: Students can take one 20 credit Independent Study module in Music plus the 20 credit module in Mathematics: 23753 LH Research Skills in Mathematics Independent Study modules: OR Independent Study modules: Students can take the 20-credit 23753 LH Research Skills in Mathematics and its co-requisite 20 credit module in Mathematics. (The co-requisite module should be chosen from the optional list below having first been discussed with the Personal Tutor. It should be chosen such that there exists alignment in content and learning outcomes with the Research Skills in Mathematics module)

Music only: Students may also apply to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H. If successful this will be taken in place of one of their semester 1 taught modules in Music only. The placement can be taken either during the summer vacation (part-time or full-time) or during semester 1 (part-time only). The placement must be completed prior to the Christmas vacation. Students who undertook a Professional Skills module at level I will not be able to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H.
