M.Sci. Theoretical Physics Full-time

Year: 1
2019/20 Session

In order for a student to progress to stage 2 they need to obtain 70% or above in the Mathematics for Physicists 1A module. If they fail to achieve this they are transfered onto the MSci Physics programme.

The following must be taken:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
Classical Mechanics and Relativity 1 03 19748 10 Semester 1
LC Electromagnetism and Temperature and Matter 03 19750 20 Semester 2
LC Quantum Mechanics and Optics and Waves 03 19718 10 Semester 1
Mathematics for Physicists 1A 03 19751 20 Full Term

Choose either List A or List B:

List A:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
Chaos and Non-linear Systems A 03 17483 10 Semester 2
Physics Laboratory 1 03 19752 20 Full Term
Physics and Communication Skills 03 00976 10 Semester 1

List B:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
Communication Skills and Data Analysis 03 18573 10 Semester 1
LC Dynamical systems: from Linear to Chaos 03 23822 10 Semester 2
LC Special Relativity and Probability and Random Processes 03 19749 10 Semester 1

If List B was chosen, choose one of the following modules:

Module Title Code Credits Semester
Introduction to Particle Physics and Cosmology 03 17484 10 Semester 2
LC Introduction to Astrophysics 03 20521 10 Semester 2

The following module may be taken in specific circumstances:

Students must also choose a 20-credit Widening Horizons Module taught by another School outside Physics and Astronomy. Students may proceed to Year 2 having failed the WHM, subject to credit-counting restraints.
