Aims of the Programme To provide students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and values to apply to the world of spatial planning, business management, and the synergies between these two domains. Knowledge refers to the acquisition of substantive expertise in the core domains of the programme: marketing; management; economics; and, spatial planning issues, policy and practice. Skills acquired are: analytical understanding of theoretical frameworks and the application of these to contemporary case studies; communication (individually and collectively) of these via written and spoken word using a variety of media. Values are important in respect of the contested and professionalised nature in which spatial planning and business management are practised in the contemporary world. In both spatial planning and business management, there is an imperative to balance a market sensibility with ethics, social justice, corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability.
Year 1 is a foundation year in which all modules are compulsory. The aim is to set the context and provide a thorough grounding for the subject areas to be studied in the following years.
Year 2 provides the students with more choice to follow their preference of subject area. The aim is to continue building general professional skills, and further specialise within themes building on the basis provided in the first year.
Year 3 provides further professional development with a dissertation and applied project work. The aim is for students to apply their critical insights to practice, and to further their knowledge within their chosen themes.
