Aims of the Programme To produce Materials Scientists who are equipped to work effectively in a professional capacity in both industrial design or research and development of sports equipment, contributing specialist skills, and who have developed the technical, intellectual and transferable skills needed to underpin their education and continuing professional development. Graduates will have a systematic knowledge and understanding of key aspects in Materials Engineering and Sports and Exercise Science, including many aspects at the forefront of the disciplines. The BSc Sports and Materials Science programme is based on a successful combination of the two Department’s high profile research work, excellent teaching staff, high technology equipment and buildings, and partnerships across the full breadth of the relevant industries. The teaching is dynamic and constantly evolving, to ensure graduates are able to function well in today’s fast moving world. Besides a solid technical education, graduates are highly numerate and have skills in problem solving, team working, and communication and information technology. These transferable skills equip them for successful careers outside as well as within the sports materials technologies.
Programme Outcomes
Students are expected to have Knowledge and Understanding of: Which will be gained through the following Teaching and Learning methods: and assessed using the following methods:
T a basic knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning Materials Engineering and Sports Science;
a knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts, principles, theories and current practice of Materials Engineering, and their limitations;
a knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts, principles, theories and current practice of Sports and Exercise Science, and their limitations
knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of the design process and design methodologies;
an understanding of the basis of physiology, biomechanics and movement control underlying sport and exercise science, and to appreciate the dynamic stresses and strains to which an athlete is subjected.
a knowledge and understanding of the characteristics and uses of engineering materials and manufacturing methods a basic knowledge and understanding of management and business practices.
an awareness of ethical and social issues related to engineering, and of professional responsibilities.
Students are expected to have attained the intellectual abilities to solve engineering problems in a systematic manner:
select and apply scientific principles, simple mathematical methods and computer based engineering tools in solving familiar Materials Engineering problems;
search for information for solving a problem, and present it for discussion
consider given information and extract that which is pertinent to a routine problem; propose or modify a materials system, manufacturing process, or analyse a materials failure; to assess risk
design a component or process using routine design techniques, and be able to modify an existing design
Apply engineering techniques to design and problem solving taking account of typical technical risks, with some grasp of commercial risk
take personal responsibility for acting in a professional and ethical manner.
Lectures, practical work, seminars,web-based and conventional guided learning; computer based workshops; tutorials and directed reading and study
Advanced lectures, seminars, tutorials and independent study
Examinations, comprising MCQs, short answers and essays, appropriate to the level of study.
Coursework to include essays, practical reports, data handling exercises; laboratory reports; personal study; project report; peer assessment.
Seminar and class presentations.
Students are expected to have attained the following Skills and other Attributes: Which will be gained through the following Teaching and Learning methods: and assessed using the following methods:
using computer based engineering tools to gather data, solve standard problems and display the result
using laboratory instrumentation appropriately
conducting prescribed laboratory experiments, estimate errors of measurements, and draw limited conclusions
undertaking routine practical or simulation tests of a design solution and comment
working safely and promoting safe practice
making acceptable presentations of technical and business information in a variety of ways
managing time and resources effectively
working as part of a team
learning under guidance
developing a personal plan of work to meat a deadline and identify the main external constraints
sorting, manipulating and presenting data through a range of standards forms
Subject specific skills: Examinations, coursework, web-based and conventional guided learning; computer-based workshops and practical reports.
Intellectual skills: Examinations, coursework, and practical reports.
Key skills: The demonstration of Key Skills forms an integral part of the assessments detailed above.
Subject specific skills are taught partly by formal instruction and partly by practical experience.
Intellectual skills are acquired by example during lectures, tutorials and seminars and in the process of researching topics.
Key skills are embedded in the academic modules; laboratory reports; oral presentations; personal study; peer assessment.
