Aims of the Programme The programme aims to offer a challenging and stimulating learning experience for individuals wishing to contribute to evolving health care needs through the practise of physiotherapy. The key aim will be to facilitate the development of autonomous, competent and capable graduate physiotherapists with potential to make a significant contribution to future healthcare services. This will centre on providing opportunities for students to develop integrated knowledge and skills underpinning effective and safe physiotherapy practice, based on a philosophy of patient-centredness. The expectations of the registered healthcare practitioner will be emphasised in terms of professional values, attitudes and behaviour commensurate with a registerable qualification. Approaches to practice will be grounded in evidence drawn from literature, policy and practice. Students will be encouraged to develop their clinical reasoning and decision-making skills informed by critical evaluation of these sources, enabling learners to develop greater self-awareness and independence in learning. Acknowledgement of Birmingham as a research-led university will be evident with opportunities provided for students to participate in research activity in the school including conducting their own project as part of ongoing programmes of research. The programme continues to be responsive to changes in the socio-political environment and promotes creativity and flexibility as key skills underpinning effective personal and professional development. The flexible BSc Physiotherapy programme offers individuals access to the existing BSc Physiotherapy FT programme on a flexible basis supporting the principle of widening participation.
