Aims of the Programme The LLB Law with Business Studies programme provides a broad education in law and in business and opens up career opportunities in many areas. In both the Law and Business parts of the programme, students are encouraged to think for themselves and to adopt a critical and questioning approach.

Lawyers acting for commercial clients can benefit from an understanding of organisations, their management and the way they structure their activities. Men and women in business can benefit from a sound knowledge of the law, particularly of those branches that affect industry and commerce.

Graduates of this degree programme who take up positions as lawyers in company legal departments will have a greater appreciation of their company's overall operations, and of the work done by their colleagues in other departments and divisions, than other law graduates. This will make for better communication and co-operation between their department and other departments in the organisation. Graduates who join solicitors' practices and deal with business clients will have an understanding of the environment in which their clients operate and of the nature of their circumstances and difficulties. Nowadays the organisation and management problems involved in running large law practices are becoming increasingly apparent and occupy a considerable amount of practitioners' time. Law with Business Studies graduates going into private practice will be well equipped to deal with these problems.

For students seeking to become practising lawyers in England & Wales and Northern Ireland, the LLB Law with Business Studies degree gives exemption from the first stage of professional examinations.

Students are exposed to a wide range of approaches to the academic study of law ¿ including the analysis of the creation and application of legal rules, the impact of law on individuals, organisations and society, and the moral and political values expressed in law and legal processes.

The LLB Law with Business Studies programme provides a supportive environment in which students take responsibility for their own learning and aim to become effective life-long learners, with opportunities to review and reflect upon their academic and personal achievements through personal development planning.

The legal rules, principles and concepts of the "core" branches of law: Public Law (including constitutional law, administrative law and human rights); Law of the European Union; Criminal Law; Civil Rights and Obligations (including Contract, Tort and Restitution); Property Law.
The main legal institutions and law-making processes in England and Wales and the Eurpean Union.
The significance of social, political, economic or commercial contexts in which legal rules and principles are developed and operate and of ethical issues and dilemmas and legal professional skills which arise for those making law and engaging in legal decision making..
A range of other areas of law, legal processes and legal techniques(according to the optional modules taken by the student).
The nature of economics and its impact on markets and business.
The nature of markets and customers and the role of marketing.
The nature of problems involved in the organisation and management of business, including financial control.

Informal assessment (not counting towards credit) takes place through written assignments in every module and tutors assess the capacity of students effectively to participate in group tutorials/seminars.

Ability to research, identify and locate a range of legal material relating to England and Wales, the European Union and international laws and treaties (including legislation, case law and academic commentary) using printed and electronic sources.
Ability to analyse legal material by: bringing together relevant information, understanding judicial techniques of precedent and statutory interpretation; dealing with and applying problem solving skills to complex facts; judging what is relevant or irrelevant; advising on the application of legal rules to facts in real or hypthetical problems; articulating arguments whether in writing or orally in a coherent and logical manner.
Capability to evaluate and discuss law and law-related material by: synthesisng assessing and critically evaluating arguments, assessing whether critical information is not available or presented in argument, evaluating the impact of law, considering possible policy options; presenting a reasoned and personal perspective on theoretical and practical issues examined; considering the relevant parts of the law’s context.
Oral and writing skills necessary to communicate facts, ideas and reasoned opinions and to offer advice about Law and Business Studies..
Gather, critically evaluate and synthesise evidence and information from a range of courses.
Teamwork skills needed to work effectively as a member of a small group.
Ability to carry out, working independently with very limited guidance, research projects in a range of Legal and Business Studies fields (including identifying accurately the issues that require research, compiling bibliographies and using an academic referencing system).
Ability to use basic information technology and specialised legal technical resources for research and writing in core and non-core areas of Law and a range of Business Studies fields (including word processing, email, the Internet, electronic databases of legal material).
Ability to monitor, reflect and build upon learning experiences and plan for personal and career development.
Some basic skills in numeracy (including scepticism about data and the ability to use numerical/statistical data in argument)

Progress reviews with personal tutor; CEPLER Professional Development Scheme; personal study; reflecting on implications of individual feedback on formative work; reflecting on individual and generic feedback on summative assessment. The School of Law continues to use introducing personal development planning in which students reflect upon their own learning, performance and achievement to plan for their personal, educational and career development.
