This module seeks to examine the interaction of US intelligence services and US foreign policy after 1945, considering strategic, bureaucratic, financial, and cultural contexts.
Through the consideration of this “missing dimension”, students will carry out a historical critique of the intelligence services while taking on the wider challenge of interpreting policymaking and implementation during and after the Cold War.
The module will examine a number of cases, including the formation of the CIA; “containment” and “liberation”; the approach “beyond the Cold War” to areas such as Cuba and Vietnam; the 1970s decline of the Agency; the “Reagan revival”; and the War on Terror.
