Aims of the Programme "The programme aims to develop the intellectual, analytical and communication skills of students by providing them with a breadth of knowledge of business management, together with the transferable skills (for example in group and team working) that are necessary to apply this knowledge in new and challenging contexts.

The underlying philosophy of the programme is that students study all aspects of business management throughout the course and do not become overly specialised. This generalist approach follows the approach that has always underpinned the UK Business suite of programmes, and has been used successfully in marketing these programmes in the past. In consultations with employers we are told that they value the broad-based knowledge that our graduates bring to their graduate trainee schemes. Given the fact that business is conducted today in a global environment and that it is necessary to be able to interact with other markets and cultures, an international underpinning is to be found in most modules. In addition, an appreciation of other contemporary issues such as digital marketing, international entrepreneurship and management strategy is provided throughout the programme, which will also endeavor to impart a sense of corporate social responsibility. Entry to the suite of BSc programmes in Dubai is into year One (stage 1). Year one is a foundation year and introduces the key themes of the programme. E.g. marketing, organisational behaviour, accounting and finance, economics and entrepreneurship. Year 1 also contains a key skills module for personal and academic development. Students are given a thorough grounding in the subject areas that they continue in later years. The modules studied will mirror the UK programme.
In Stage Two we adopt a generalist approach although modules begin to become more focused and specialized. The modules on the programme mirror those modules already offered in the UK based programme. The modules have been chosen as the most appropriate modules for the coherence of the programme, and the most suitable for the Dubai market for e.g. Services and Retail Strategy, that sits well with the nature of retail markets in Dubai, Intermediate Business Economics and Macro Economy, that allows room to contextulise the UAE economy in general and Dubai?s macro economy in particular. Further modules such as Accounting, Management and Accountability that is suitable to offer discussions related to local context of accounting.
Dubai Students also have an option to Study at UoB Birmingham campus during year-2, alongside our Birmingham Campus cohorts. The availability of this opportunity is dependent upon performance in Stage 1 of the programme.
Stage Three features modules that are increasingly focused. The year is underpinned by a compulsory dissertation, which allows the student to investigate in-depth an area of personal interest. At stage three the study spread provides the opportunity to develop the much needed entrepreneurial mind set required by Dubai graduates in modules such as Small Business and Entrepreneurship and relevant marketing knowledge with Contemporary Issues in Marketing. There is further focus in developing the strategy knowledge when students are on specific module on Business Strategy on Emerging Economies.
Students who have had some work experience over the summer period and would want to produce a defined extended piece of work, based on their work experience, can pick the Professional development module as an alternative to one of the 4 compulsory taught modules.
