Description This module caters for Intermediate learners of German and will consolidate, develop, and extend listening, speaking, reading and writing skills acquired at IWLP German Level 3 & 4A or equivalent (post A1, middle of A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference). Receptive and productive skills will be developed within a range of contexts in the target language by the use of authentic materials, text and practice books, etc. Structured language will be taught in the context of situations and personalised topics and you will begin to cope with a variety of less predictable real life situations. However, particular emphasis will be put on productive skills (speaking and writing). The course content will be delivered in a lively and interactive way, through activities designed to enable you to use the language in context, either in small groups or in pairs.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and use of complex grammatical structures appropriately.Speak confidently about themselves and others in the present, past and future. Give opinion about and discuss selected topics;
  • Demonstrate good command of the more complex grammar and vocabulary seen in class both in writing and speaking;
  • Read and understand both didactic and selected authentic German texts;
  • Show understanding of spoken German in predictable contexts and convey extracted information on semi-complex issues;
  • Convey an increased understanding of the target language culture and society;
  • Demonstrate the achievement of A2.2 Level of the CEFR for languages in the use of German.

2-hour written exam (65%) [normally in Semester 2]
10-minute oral exam (35%) [normally in Semester 2]

Alternative Assessment for single-semester Exchange students (Semester 2 only):
2-hour written exam [100%]

Alternative assessment if on campus activity is restricted: proctored exams will be converted to take home papers and live oral assessments will either be recorded presentations or conducted via Zoom/Skype.
