Aims of the Programme To enable the students to gain relevant knowledge about social, medical and psychological approaches to understanding mental health from a deaf perspective. The programme aims to create an understanding of the specific nature of a deaf experience of mental health problems and how social and health services can best address these specific needs in addition to the common needs of all people with mental health problems.

To have a knowledge and understanding of critical perspectives on the discriminatory and oppressive barriers deaf people experience in accessing deaf and mental health services a critical appreciation of the factors to consider when communicating and interacting with deaf people; a critical appreciation of the range of mental health problems and how they are manifest in deaf people and of the specialist and generic mental health services and interventions available for them
To have a knowledge and understanding of critical perspectives on Values Based Practice within the context of mental health and deafness service provision; evaluations of the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities from a deaf perspective; a critical appreciation of the relationship between the legal and policy framework, and the related roles and responsibilities of practitioners within mental health and deafness service provision
To have a knowledge and understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a range of effective communication methods, and a critical view of factors that help and/or hinder, interaction with deaf people; the value of methods of informal and formal assessment when adaptated for use with deaf people experiencing mental health problems
To have a theoretical understanding of the basic tenents of behaviourism and of their application to an understanding of the lived experiences of deaf people; critical evaluation of the processes of socialisation for deaf people; applications of theory on patterns of development and their impact throughout the lives of deaf people
To have a knowledge and understanding of theoretical ideas and the research evidence base about the social construction of mental health problems; critical evaluation of the role of power and labelling in the experience of mental health problems for deaf people the strengths and weaknesses of a range of social interventions when applied with work with deaf people with mental health problems
To have a knowledge and understanding of the range and complex nature of specific and generic care pathways available for Deaf people with mental health problems; the range of abuse that Deaf people may experience, within and outside of the context of service provision, and the roles and responsibilities of practioners in safeguarding adults a critical understanding of a social model approach to understanding the causes of vulnerability to abuse for Deaf people with mental health problems and evaluation of its application to responding to, and preventing, the abuse of Deaf people with mental health problems
Lectures and group work exercises supplemented with group tutorials and private study activities including locally organised learning set tasks
Students will complete a project portfolio involving the collection and presentation of information on deaf and mental health service provision in their locality combined with a critical/reflective analysis concerning problems of access to those services.
An essay examining how the legal, policy and values framework impacts on service provision for mental health and deafness
Students will complete a case analysis examining the interaction of practical communication skills and the theory and practice of assessment in the context of mental health and deafness
Students will complete a case study based examination of developmental life experiences and psychological interventions appropriate for utilisation in mental health and deafness
Students will complete an essay examining the potential of social theory in explaining the lived experiences of deaf people with mental health problems and the implications for meeting social and health care needs
Students will complete an essay examining the cause of vulnerability to abuse for Deaf people with mental health problems in the context of care pathways and the implications for Safeguarding
