This module provides students with the foundation knowledge and skills to learn how to nurse adults, children, people with learning disabilities and mental health clients in a variety of clinical settings. Learning will take place in lectures, small group work, directed reading, web based activities and practical ‘hands on’ sessions in the clinical skills laboratories. Through ‘case studies’ students will be introduced to the core skills of nursing including: nursing practice, decision making, communication (including health informatics e-ICE), interpersonal skills, and team working which will be supported by developing an understanding of professional values and regulations that inform and guide nursing practice. Students will have two 7 week clinical placements, one in an adult hospital and one in a mental health setting. Whilst out on placement each student will be supported and work with a clinical mentor (a qualified nurse).
