Aims of the Programme To enable candidates to demonstrate the knowledge and practice competences necessary to qualify as Approved Social Workers a specialist role enabling already qualified social workers to act under the Mental Health Act 1983 and for completion of the General Social Care Council's Specialist Award in Social Work in Mental Health Services.

The legal and policy contexts within which post-qualifying social work takes place; the ethical and value base of post-qualifying social work practice; models of origins of mental distress and appropriate interventions in mental health (at the appropriate level)
The power imbalances inherent within ASW practice and how this differs from other elements of the social work role; the broad responsibilities of an ASW and how these differ from other elements of the social work role (at the appropriate level)
The role and function of an ASW; the specific issues involved in assessing a range of particular client groups within the context of statutory mental health work; the application of the principles of Anti-Discriminatory Practice within Approved Social Work practice (at the appropriate level)
The principles and practice of risk assessment in mental health work; the principles of the mental health legislation and the provisions of particular sections of the 1983 Mental Health Act; the principal models of explanation of the origins and implications of mental disorders; the implications of particular disorders for the lives of those experiencing them and the range of treatments available (at the appropriate level)
The influence people experiencing mental disorder have had and can have over the service provided for them; appropriate sections of codes of practice, policies and procedures and other pieces of legislation relevant to ASW practice and their provisions (at the appropriate level)
Models and principles of adult learning; principles of evaluating practice learning; issues of power and oppression in adult learning (at the appropriate level)
Lectures and seminars supported by video material, supplemented by supervised practice under the guidance of a practice supervisor and by guided reading and other private study. Course participants will also receive opportunities to participate in locally organised workshops and receive feedback as their work progresses.
Candidates complete an analytical case study that are assessed for the demonstration of adherence to Post Qualification standards of social work practice and understanding of its legal, research and policy base. This is supplemented by a report on observation of the candidate's practice completed by a practice assessor. Candidates complete a written analysis linking theory to practice of an ASW assessment undertaken by an experienced ASW. This is assessed for the demonstration of a range of knowledge-based competences matching these key areas. Candidates complete a portfolio of evidence that is assessed for the demonstration of a range of knowledge-based competences matching these key areas. Central to the portfolio are three detailed case studies of 4500 words in which they demonstrate knowledge and understanding in these areas. The ability to make decisions to detain or not on the basis of a clear delineation of the risk involved; the ability to synthesise a wide ranging of information in making ASW assessments (at the appropriate level)
The ability to identify particular mental disorders and the views of the origins and implications of these implied by the principal models of explanation; the ability to apply knowledge of the implications of particular disorders for the lives of those experiencing them and the range of treatments available within ASW assessments (at the appropriate level)
The ability to set in place appropriate practical arrangements for a structured learning experience for a fellow professional; the ability to provide deliver a structured learning experience for a fellow professional; the ability to evaluate their own contribution to the learning of another professional (at the appropriate level)
Lectures and seminar presentations supported by video material and supplemented by supervised practice under the guidance of a practice supervisor and by guided reading and other private study. Course participants undertake supervised practice under the guidance of a practice supervisor to augment the knowledge gained. Feedback will be provided by experienced training staff during the practical application of skills learnt.
