Description The module supplies the basic knowledge necessary in assessing risks from operating fuel cell and/or hydrogen systems. Students will understand effects and learn how to mitigate and manage risks. The topics covered in the module are:
• Introduction to hydrogen safety
• Hydrogen properties and hazards, comparison with other fuels
• Regulations, Codes and Standards (RCS) and hydrogen safety engineering
• Unignited releases, under-expanded jet theory and the similarity law
• Spontaneous ignition of hydrogen sudden release
• Microflames
• Jet fires
• Hydrogen embrittlement and permeation
• Case studies
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge related to hydrogen properties and hazards and ability to apply this knowledge to hydrogen safety engineering design, including compliance with regulations, codes and standards
  • Evaluate requirements for safety provisions by taking into consideration knowledge on hydrogen releases, ignition, jet fires and material properties
  • Illustrate mastery in analysing complex hydrogen safety problems both systematically and creatively, by integrating fundamental knowledge and engineering approaches from a variety of disciplines
  • Apply self-direction and originality in tackling and solving hydrogen safety problems at a professional or equivalent level

Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessment: Two 5,000 word study reports (ea. 50%)
Reassessment: 100% report, 5000 words.
