Aims of the Programme A graduate awarded the Master of Nursing programme will have developed a critical understanding of a diverse and complex body of knowledge applied to and developed through nursing practice. Much of this knowledge will be contemporary and at the current boundaries of the discipline. Engagement in clinical research, including the critical evaluation of evidence and developing leadership of evidence-based practice and practice improvement, is a theme developed through the programme. Students are encouraged to develop skills of self- assessment, critical reflection and self-regulation and the developing confidence to lead clinical enquiry and manage improvements in care teams. They will be able to critically reflect and systematically and critically evaluate evidence, arguments and assumptions in order to reach sound judgements, generate new ideas and to communicate effectively to a range of audiences. Moreover, graduates should have the qualities needed for nursing employment in roles requiring the exercise of personal / professional responsibility, and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances.

Graduates will be professional citizens in nursing, contributing positively to the nursing community with developed personal and professional attributes for confident leadership and delivery, confidence in leading quality improvement with the readiness to embark on a clinical research career pathway and the ability to supervise compassionate nursing practice with accurate nursing assessment, safe clinical decision making and evidence based delivery of nursing practice.

The programme is, thus, designed to prepare proficient, caring and accountable practitioners who contribute safely and effectively to the complexities of contemporary health care and whose practice is informed by an extensive knowledge base of relevant theory and research. The programme further fosters an awareness of inter-professionalism and multi-agency working in health care delivery through a strategy of shared learning and places a strong emphasis on holism, public health and social inclusion in nursing practice.
