B.A. Classical Literature and Civilisation and Philosophy Full-time

Year: 2
2021/22 Session

Students choose 40-80 credits from the full range of CAHA LI Research Seminars and options including the appropriate level of language (beginners or intermediate or advanced Latin, Greek, Egyptian or Akkadian). If a Research Seminar A and B is selected in semester one this has to be matched with Research Seminar B in semester two. There will be a narrow choice of recommended modules aimed at ensuring core skills and curriculum coherence is maintained.

The optional modules are divided into three categories that represent three core areas of philosophy: history of philosophy; ethics and social philosophy; epistemology metaphysics, and philosophy of mind and language. These groupings are the following: (Please note: the specific modules listed are indicative, as provision may evolve to reflect, for example, staffing changes)

Group A: Mind-Body Problem, Speaking of Things, Science and Nature, Logic: Its Limits and Scope, Elements of Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mental Health

Group B: The Ethics and Politics of Climate Change, Feminist Philosophy, The Ethics of Killing , Sex, Ethics and Philosophy, Political Disagreement

Group C: Experience and Reason, Aesthetics through History, History of Analytic Philosophy

If joint honours philosophy students are doing either 60 or 80 credits of philosophy in Stage II, they are required to choose optional modules from at least two groups. If they are doing only 40 credits of philosophy in Stage II, then this rule does not apply - they can choose two modules from just one group.
