Description This module develops further the basic topics of the differential and integral calculus met in prerequisites Mathematics Core 1 and 2.

The concepts of differentiation and integration are extended to cover functions of several real variables. The module includes an introduction to the more important classical differential equations; series expansions and transform methods of solution; boundary value problems.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student will be able to: use the notation and basic manipulative techniques of the calculus of functions of several real variables; apply a variety of analytic and numerical techniques to solve problems in the calculus of several real variables, eg to find and analyse the stationary points of functions of more than one variable; set up and solve simple variational problems; set up and solve boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations using a variety of techniques.
