Description
The purpose of this module is to ensure students gain a strong appreciation of the importance of and some of the complexities around Human Resource Development (HRD). The module will be used to advance student understanding of Human Resource Development on at three levels: societal, organisational and at the level of the individual employee. The module will include consideration of how HRD contributes to competitiveness, organisational performance and strategy. The module will enable students to increase their understanding of the feasibilities of successfully implementing various HRD practices and help them to develop relevant skills in order to do so. This will include consideration of how employees learn and develop and the role played by line management and other organisational actors. The module will also allow students to reflect on contemporary issues in HRD including changes to skill demands, the use of technology for delivering learning and development, and the complexity and ethical questions associated with the development of employees.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically analyse the importance of human resource development to national competitiveness.
Critically evaluate the contributions of HRD to organisational performance.
Demonstrate insight into how to support the learning of adults in such a way as it is likely to improve job performance, effectively enable change and how people experience change.
Appraise the challenges associated with implementing HRD practices and the skills needed by HR practitioners to do this effectively. This includes the practice of assessing learning needs.
Evaluate the benefits of using technology to support employee learning and development.
Demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to use facilitation and coaching for improving employee performance and facilitating management of change.
Critically reflect on complex ethical questions associated with the development of employees.
