Description The HRM dissertation (CIPD) is a full academic year module, integrating a training programme in research methods and critical appraisal of research approaches used in conducting HRM & ER research. Students will produce an in-depth individual research study of a particular issue within the field of Human Resource Management. This module gives students the opportunity to engage in applied research by applying elements of HRM and Employment Relations concepts and practice, after identifying a relevant specific research topic to illustrate their knowledge, understanding and critical analytical skills.

Students are expected to demonstrate that they can independently write a substantial academic dissertation. In doing so they are expected to: identify research issue(s) or problem(s); understand current theory and literature; evaluate and apply appropriate research methods, analytical techniques, data collection and analysis; outline and interpret the results; and, finally, identify conclusions, and implications and recommendations, if relevant to the study.

Students on the MSc HRM will be able to select either to complete a company based dissertation or a traditional dissertation. Company based dissertations will operate on a competitive basis and students will need to apply and be successful in the recruitment process. Those students who wish to undertake a company based dissertation but are unsuccessful in obtaining a position/ company based project will complete the traditional dissertation assessment.

For students aiming to be awarded with the CIPD accreditation will also be required to write a specific chapter, where they are expected to develop and reflect on practice and/or policy implications of their chosen HR topic.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Design, plan and execute an independent research project, including the selection and application of appropriate research methods.
  • Identify and justify a business issue that is of strategic relevance to the organization.
  • Critically analyse and discuss existing literature, contemporary HR policy and practice relevant to the chosen issue.
  • Undertake a systematic analysis of quantitative and/or qualitative information and present the results in a clear and consistent manner.
  • Analyse and evaluate empirical evidence and assess its implications for theory and practice.
  • Draw realistic and appropriate conclusions, including an evaluation of the role and impact of such conclusions for ethical HRM practice and responsible business and citizens in the world of work and wider society (e.g., ethical HR best practice, valuing people, equality, working inclusively, employee well-being).
  • Reflect on practice and/or policy implications of chosen HR topic.
  • Demonstrate competence in postgraduate study skills, particularly critical writing and analytical skills.
