Description The module draws directly from research being undertaken by members of the Work Inclusivity Research Centre at the University of Birmingham and provides an introduction to the main issues related to the management of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. In particular, it investigates the contested nature of equality and diversity management, explores the business and moral cases for managing equality and diversity, and presents empirical evidence on similarities and differences in the management of diversity either across different sectors and/or across different countries. The module also involves workshops and other activities looking at case studies and practical applications of equality and diversity management including a digital group project on HRM policy and practice. In doing so, students will be provided with the skills to critically evaluate the effectiveness of different approaches in the management of equality and diversity as well as question and assess their own values in that regard.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Explain the key theoretical approaches to understanding equalities issues, including psychological, sociological and HRM approaches.
  • Critically evaluate the business and moral case for diversity management using theory and empirical evidence and assess their own values in that regard.
  • Appraise research evidence and methodological approaches used in the diversity management literature.
  • Examine and evaluate the role of national context, organisational culture, HRM policy and practice, and relevant legislation, in shaping the experience and management of diversity.
  • Critically reflect on the impact, effectiveness and appropriateness of Equality and Diversity policies and other interventions, taking in consideration key issues that should be considered in the development of Equality and Diversity policy.
