Description
Managing Work and Organisation explores how organisations really work, what work is like for employees, how they are managed, and how organisations relate to wider society. Learning is based on real world examples and the most relevant research from books and academic journals. The approach taken is a critical one in that we seek to understand why organisations really do what they do, rather than taking their word for it or accepting characterizations that lack evidence and which seek to ‘promote’ rather than understand. Students will be taken on a journey from the birth of industrial society to the age of the digital nomad, and along the way they will explore how some organisations are similar to the mafia, how work for some has become ‘extreme’ and how some organisations exploit global inequalities whilst others advocate for the human rights of workers around the world to be respected.
