Aims of the Programme The aims of the programme are:To give students knowledge of how individuals are affected by ASDs, based on current research and theoretical understandings and to enable students to understand the implications of this for the support and education of adults with ASDs throughout the ability range and in a range of different settings. ;To provide knowledge of approaches to the support and education of adults with ASDs that address fundamental needs, based on current research and theoretical understandings ; To explore a range of models of support provision for adults with diverse abilities and needs, and to develop ways of enhancing the quality of the services currently provided, in order to help individuals to fulfil their potential.
Programme Outcomes
Students are expected to have Knowledge and Understanding of: Which will be gained through the following Teaching and Learning methods: and assessed using the following methods:
H/M: Understand the need to involve individuals with ASDs in planning and decision-making, and be able to implement a person-centred approach in planning support
H/M: understand the value of a programme for self advocacy for all adults with ASDs and be able to implement such a programme
H/M: understand autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) as developmental disorders that persist into adulthood with a wide range of manifestations in terms of both learning needs and skills
H/M: understand the importance of collaborative work between professionals and families and be aware of models for promoting collaboration

Written practice-based assignments, projects and dissertation
Students are expected to have attained the following Skills and other Attributes: Which will be gained through the following Teaching and Learning methods: and assessed using the following methods:
H/M: be able to offer support to individuals with ASDs in gaining access to education, leisure, life skills and employment (as appropriate) and plan and implement a programme of access
H/M: be aware of the conditions, support and style of approach that are likely to promote social, emotional and physical well-being in adults with ASDs
H/M: be aware of the emerging `culture of autism¿ and the many skills and strengths individuals have, that need to be nurtured and celebrated by those in support roles
H/M: be aware of the range of service provision that is necessary and know about different models for service delivery, nationally and internationally
