Description There are three components to the module: Dynamical systems, Chaos and Non-Linear Systems and Chaos Demonstrations. The Dynamical systems investigate Newtonian systems (kinematics) and an introduction to Fluid Dynamics. The Chaos and Non-Linear Systems component provides an introduction to the modern theory of chaos and dynamical systems. The Chaos Demonstrations are experiments designed to illustrate the physical phenomena discussed in the Chaos and Non-Linear Systems lectures.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Understand the basic ideas of linearity and non-linearity, chaos, dynamical systems, and fluid mechanics and to apply these to specific physical situations;
  • Recognise the signatures of chaos in an experimental system and analyse the resulting data.
