Aims of the Programme To enable the students to gain relevant knowledge about social, medical and psychological approaches to understanding mental health from a deaf perspective. The programme aims to create an understanding of the specific nature of a deaf experience of mental health problems and how social and health services can best address these specific needs in addition to the common needs of all people with mental health problems.

Students are expected to have Knowledge and Understanding of: Which will be gained through the following Teaching and Learning methods: and assessed using the following methods:
To have knowledge and understanding of the barriers deaf people experience in accessing deaf and mental health services; basic considerations to take account of when communicating and interacting with deaf people and the basic categories of mental health problems and how they are manifest in deaf people and the range of mental health services and interventions available for them.
To have knowledge and understanding of a Values Based Practice approach within the context of mental health and deafness service provision; the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities from a deaf perspective and evaluate the legal and policy framework, and the related roles and responsibilities of practitioners, for mental health and deafness service provision.
To have knowledge and understanding of how to identify and evaluate factors that can potentially help and/or hinder effective communication with deaf people; methods of informal and formal assessment of deaf people with mental health problems.
To have knowledge and understanding of the basic tenets of behaviourism and their relevance to understanding the lives of deaf people; processes of socialisation for deaf people; psychological interventions (Behavioural Modification; Cognitive Approaches; Psychodynamic Interventions) and their application with deaf people with mental health problems and patterns of development and their impact throughout the lives of deaf people
Students should have a knowledge and understanding of the theoretical ideas about the social construction of mental health problems; the role of power and labelling in the experience of mental health problems for deaf people and evaluate a range of social interventions appropriate for deaf people with mental health problems.
To have a knowledge and understanding of how to evaluate the range and nature of care pathways available for Deaf people with mental health problems; the forms of abuse that Deaf people with mental health problems may experience and the roles and responsibilities of practitioners in safeguarding adults; an understanding of a social model approach to the causes of vulnerability to abuse for Deaf people with mental health problems
Lectures and group work exercises supplemented with group tutorials and private study activities including locally organised learning set tasks
Students will complete a project portfolio involving the collection and presentation of information on deaf and mental health service provision in their locality combined with a critical/reflective analysis concerning problems of access to those services.
An essay examining how the legal, policy and values framework impacts on service provision for mental health and deafness
Students will complete a case analysis examining the interaction of practical communication skills and the theory and practice of assessment in the context of mental health and deafness
Students will complete a case study based examination of developmental life experiences and psychological interventions appropriate for utilisation in mental health and deafness
Students will complete an essay examining the potential of social theory in explaining the lived experiences of deaf people with mental health problems and the implications for meeting social and health care needs
Students will complete an essay examining the cause of vulnerability to abuse for Deaf people with mental health problems in the context of care pathways and the implications for Safeguarding

to have the ability to evaluate the match between the values set as goals for mental health and deaf services within policy (for example, within the Essential Shared Capabilities) and local policy and service provision

to have the ability to recognise the particular communication needs of deaf people and how these can be addressed in assessments of mental health amongst members of the deaf community

to have the ability to identify the role of social interventions within care plans for deaf people experiencing mental health problems
to have the ability to identify the potential difficulties for deaf people with mental health problems in negotiating care pathways to deaf and mental health services and the ability to identify appropriate courses of action when encountering abuse of deaf people with mental health problems
