Description This module is aimed at lower-intermediate students of German (who have started A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference) and will build upon the knowledge acquired in IWLP German Level 2 or equivalent by further developing and consolidating the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Structured language use will be taught and practised, across targeted contexts and relevant personalised topics. As grammar rules become more complex, every new instance or element will receive an ample training, which will also include revising and consolidating past knowledge. Materials will be drawn from authentic sources and will be used to improve and to provide stimulus for the development of both productive skills (speaking and writing) and receptive skills (reading and listening).

Particular emphasis will be put on gradually balancing and strengthening receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills, with more attention given to the receptive skills at this level (3A). The course content is delivered in a lively and interactive way, intensively (but not exclusively) relying on digital/online platforms, together with traditional forms of teaching and learning. Incorporating digital components in language learning will create a more flexible and creative, student-centred experience.

Activities are designed to enable students to use the language in context. Digital/online delivery is relying on students’ independence, which will be guided through immediate feedback to help flexible, personally paced learning. Further guidance will be given using both digital and in person contact hours.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the main aspects of German grammar and apply them appropriately.
  • Extract and summarise relevant information from authentic but simple texts in German.
  • Display increased knowledge of German culture and society and convey more complex information to language use at this level.
  • Show evidence of working towards the use of German language to A2.1 level of the CEFR for languages.
