Description This module aims at the more advanced level and extends receptive and productive skills to a more sophisticated level of business Chinese. Learning strategies and study methods will be developed to increase independent learning. Students will be exposed to a variety of different types of written materials in business contexts. It will teach students to critically analyse written Chinese and to develop their comprehension skills by reading different styles of business emails/articles/documents. It also aims to enhance students’ ability to express themselves in writing in Chinese through work on a range of business topics.
The taught language in class is majorly in Mandarin Chinese. Students will be given opportunities to work in a group as well as individually. Teaching is through practical language classes involving both whole-group and small group / pair-work activities with emphasis on communicative settings, use of visual aids and audio/video materials from the internet where appropriate.
The course will also aim to equip students with the ability to access the language autonomously.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a deeper insight into China’s rapidly developing economy
  • Show a better understanding of complex spoken language in business conservations
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of Chinese business practices, culture and etiquette through reading and case studies
  • Write texts of increasing length and complexity by using a good amount of references within the broader contexts covered in class
  • Communicate more confidently and effectively in writing business emails such as processing complaints and response on enquiries
Assessment 27126-01 : Oral-Aural Exercise with supporting written/visual aids : Presentation (50%)
27126-02 : 2hr reading and writing exam : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (50%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Assessments:
Oral-aural exercise (with supporting written/visual aids) (50%) and Two-hour reading and writing exam (50%)

If live oral assessments are planned, then the alternative will either be recorded presentations or conducted via Zoom/Skype Proctored exams will be converted to take home papers
