Aims of the Programme The intention of the BDS programme is to produce an educational environment which allows undergraduates to develop an analytical approach to both the theory and practice of clinical dentistry. This is derived from their training in the basic and clinical sciences. Delivery of oral and dental care is a team effort within which the dentist is expected to take the lead, and part of our strategy is directed at the development of these skills. In this respect we believe that dental students should become familiar with a range of dental specialties early in their course through observation when they are learning the basic and behavioural sciences, and that the clinical treatment of patients with appropriate staff direction is central to dental undergraduate training. Accordingly the aims of programme are as follows:-
  • 1. To satisfy the requirements of the General Dental Council as stated in `Preparing for Practice? and the benchmarking statements for Dentistry.
  • 2. To produce ethical, caring, knowledgeable and skilful graduates with a sound scientific foundation who are competent to practise dentistry, able to accept professional responsibility for the effective and safe delivery of care for patients and committed to continuing patient care.
  • 3. To provide students with the necessary skills to progress to the next phase of their professional training as Foundation Dentists or other areas of postgraduate dental experience.
  • 4. To instil the need for continuing professional and personal development throughout their careers, and so subscribe to the concept of lifelong learning.

The scientific basis of dentistry, including the relevant biological, behavioural and medical sciences
The causes and mechanisms of disease and their relationship to the practise of dentistry
The principles of health promotion and disease prevention
The legal, moral and ethical responsibilities involved in the provision of dental care to patients and to populations
The spectrum of clinical disciplines in dentistry and their relationship to whole patient care
The healthcare setting in which dentists work in the UK, how this is organised and managed and the relationship with health policy
Lectures, small group teaching, practical exercises, laboratory work, e-learning, clinical placements, independent learning, enquiry based learning, reflection, individual and group presentations
Examinations (MCQ, EMQ, SAQ, essay); coursework including presentations and written work, both individual and group
