Aims of the Programme

Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences



BSc/MSci Sport Exercise and Health Sciences aims to develop and apply knowledge in the sciences of sport, exercise, health and rehabilitation. It embraces our three key research themes:

1. Sport Performance, Policy and Education
2. Exercise, Medicine and Health
3. Human Movement and Rehabilitation
Our interdisciplinary programme aims to explore questions of sport and performance and the role of exercise in promoting and maintaining health throughout the lifespan.

Modules across the school provide the opportunity to study in many areas from both scientific and applied perspectives. Topics included are physiology, biochemistry, psychology and motor control, with the option to take modules in complementary topics such as physical education, coaching, and sociology. More multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary modules are included at year 3 and year 4.

Year in International Business (Dubai)



This BSc Year in International Business (Dubai) programme offers students studying on programmes across the University of Birmingham the opportunity to study for a year at the University of Birmingham Dubai campus and gain a sound understanding of international business management.

Through study on this programme students will gain an understanding of Business Management within a regional and international context as a broad discipline and develop an appreciation of research relevant to that discipline. Students on this programme will gain intellectual grounding, core knowledge and understanding of international business and it also offers students the opportunity to develop their intellectual skills, analytical skills, problem-solving skills and communication skills which are crucial within the world of business. Transferable skills are key to this programme where students through formative and summative assessment will develop their communication and team working skills whilst also being provided with a breadth of knowledge of business management. The underlying philosophy of the programme is that students can study a mix of core 1st year international business management modules, with one module focusing on responsible business, reflecting the School’s mission; and choose 3 option modules. As this programme is unique to the Dubai campus students will be offered the opportunity to study a 10 credit optional module Arabic Language (1).

The skills that students will develop and the experiences they will have are highlighted as follows:

• Apply critical thinking and analytical skills – notably, the ability to filter and assess complex arguments.
• Develop a sensitivity to different international and cultural perspectives within business.
• Critically self-reflect and develop employability and transferable skills.
• Develop communication skills both written and verbal.

Delivery of all modules on this programme will be through a mix of lectures, seminars, class discussions, readings, case studies, media, invited guest speakers and online webinars.

Assessment of the programme will be through formative and summative assessment and will include a mix of assessment methods across the modules, including: formal exams, essays, group work and oral presentations.

On completion of this one year programme students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills that can be utilised when they return to their degree programme, and also after graduation where they may wish to seek employment or further study in the discipline of international business.

Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences



1. the factual and theoretical base of physiology, psychology, biochemistry, functional anatomy and biomechanics as they apply to the study of exercise, sport and health(BSc, MSci)
2. the basis of research design and the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and have experience in the methods of laboratory and field experimentation, data gathering and statistics (BSc, MSci)

3. Key Skills: Students will develop the ability to communicate in a variety of ways including oral presentations, posters and project reports for a variety of audiences. They should be numerate and literate and have the appropriate computer and IT skills to enable them to access, analyse and present data and information. Subject specific skills are taught partly by formal instruction and partly by practical experience.
Intellectual skills are acquired during lectures, tutorials and seminars and during the research process. There are also specific support for these skills in the Skills modules.
Key skills are embedded in the academic modules; some, such as IT skills, are overtly taught, others are developed via exercises or during the preparation process for formative and summative assessments. They are also supported more specifically through the tutorial system.
