Programme Requirements for 2024/25 Session

Year: 1
2024/25 Session
Students can study: Route 1: A Major in French. Students study French alongside one modern foreign language. In Year 1 and Final Year, they must take a minimum of 80 credits in French and 40 credits in the modern foreign language. In Year 2, depending on the languages studied, students will either take 80 credits or 70 credits in French. NB Mandarin Chinese and Japanese can only be studied on Route 1 (Major in French). Students take all compulsory core language modules in their relevant languages as described below, plus further credits appropriate to their level (beginners or advanced).
Route 2: A Joint Honours in French. Students study French alongside one modern foreign language. Students must take a minimum of 60 credits in French and 60 credits in one modern foreign language in Year 1. In Year 2 and Final Year, students may be able to vary their credit weighting but this will depend on the languages they study. Please note: some languages only allow 40 credits per year (Mandarin Chinese and Japanese), others permit up to 80 credits if combined with departmental options (German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish). Students take all compulsory core language modules in their relevant languages as described below, plus further credits appropriate to their level (beginners or advanced).
With the approval of relevant staff (normally the Director of Undergraduate Studies and/ or Admissions Tutor, in consultation with teaching colleagues, according to module availability) students may seek to change the number and weighting of their languages at appropriate points in the degree (e.g. once end-of-stage results are confirmed) NB students may not normally pick up a supplementary language after the standard course change period at the start of Stage I, even if they have A Levels or equivalent in all relevant languages
The University Regulations state that the minimum requirement for a named specialist minor (Route 1) is 100 credits. For students who wish to study two languages equally (Route 2) the minimum requirement is 160 credits in each language.

For ALL routes, 1-2, the following core language modules – 40 credits for post beginners, or 40 credits at beginners level – are compulsory at Stage I for each language followed.
No more than two languages may be taken at beginners level, one of which must be Beginners French.
Mandarin Chinese and Japanese can only be taken to a maximum of 40 credits in any year. You can only study Mandarin Chinese and Japanese with a Major in French.

Route 2 (JH in French)
Students taking 60 credits in French (language A): [Advanced French or Beginners French] Choose one optional module in French (includes departmental options).
And 60 credits in language B: [Advanced German, Italian, Russian, Spanish or Beginners German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish] Choose one optional module in language B (includes departmental options)
For ALL routes, 1-2, in addition to the core language module(s) for their chosen language(s), students choose additional Level C modules provided annually by the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music, up to the relevant credit value for their respective route, to a combined total of 120 credits. Depending on the number of credits students opt to take in each language, optional modules choices may be restricted. Availability of particular modules varies from year to year and is subject to timetabling constraints.
