Description This module will be delivered over the course of three hours per week. One hour (‘Learning German’) will introduce students to key topics in German grammar, dictionary work and general work on language learning. The other two hours (‘Sprachpraxis’) will be predominantly communicative, and will enable students to work on all four skills.
Learning Outcomes On completion of these linked modules the student will be able to:
  • Display a competent knowledge of post A Level German grammar and usage, both orally and in the written language;
  • Read and understand authentic examples of written German without constant recourse to a dictionary;;
  • Listen to and understand substantial extracts of spoken German taken from authentic sources;;
  • Converse fluently in German on topics covered during the course;
  • Write about topics covered during the course in accurate and idiomatic German;
  • Work on their German as independent learners, drawing on a range of printed and online resources.
Assessment 08853-08 : 500-600 word Essay : Coursework (20%)
08853-11 : Listening Test : Class Test (10%)
08853-12 : 3hr Exam : Exam (Centrally Timetabled) - Written Unseen (50%)
08853-13 : 15-minute Oral Exam : Practical (20%)

  • One essay in German of 500 words (20%)
  • Listening test (to be organised by Department) (10%)
  • Summer exam of 3 hours (50%)
