Aims of the Programme The intention of this award is to build on the learning which Social Workers have acquired through their qualifying training and post qualifying experience within the specialist field of children and families practice. The programme aims to develop the skills and knowledge base of qualified practitioners, so that they are able to provide a high quality, critically analytical evidence-based service to children and families presenting with complex needs including abuse and neglect. The programme particularly emphasises skills in critical reflection, evaluation and analysis, the use of attachment theory and confidence in working with persons from diverse backgrounds. Working within multi-disciplinary settings and within a performance management culture are also emphasised within the programme. There is a strong practice element to the programme and workplace based assessment of each candidate’s practice by a suitably qualified workplace supervisor is an integral component of the course. The programme is modular in nature and aims to offer a critical, analytical and research-informed approach to the key areas of contemporary social work practice with children and their families: child development, safeguarding and the assessment of risk, child care law, child-centred practice, managing change and transitions, and enabling the learning of others. Ultimately, we aim to produce practitioners who are “thinking performers” thereby promoting the greater likelihood of achieving optimal outcomes for service users. Satisfactory completion of all 6 modules leads to the B.Phil. Candidates who successfully complete module 1 – Consolidating Social Work Practice etc (08 21204) plus any two others (ie 60 credits at level H) will be eligible for an Advanced Certificate in Specialist Social Work with Children, Young People, the Families and Carers
