2024/25 Session
Final Year Independent Study Project in Modern Languages (Dissertation) for all students who have not already met the University's Study requirements and who would not otherwise do so in other Stage III assessments.
The following core language modules are compulsory at Stage III for each language followed.
Portuguese can only be taken to a maximum of 80 credits in Year 2 if combined with 20 credits of departmental modules and the Independent Study module.
JH Students take all compulsory core language modules in their relevant language, as described below, plus further credits appropriate to their level as set out in handbook for the relevant language section.

In addition to the core language module(s) for their chosen languages(s) students follow additional Level H modules for each language up to the relevant credit value for their respective programme, to a combined total of 120 credits. Depending on the number of credits students opt to take in each language, optional module choices may be restricted (please refer to the relevant language section in the BA Modern Languages handbook and language-specific module choice information.)

English Literature Pathway:
Students choosing to study 80 credits in English Literature can study either:
(a) Dissertation in English Literature (40 credits) and 40 credits of optional modules, at least 20 credits per semester.
(b) Extended Essay in English Literature (20 credits) and 60 credits of optional modules, at least 20 credits per semester.
Students choosing to study 60 credits in English Literature must study Extended Essay in English Literature (20 credits) and 40 credits of optional modules, 20 credits per semester.
Students choosing to study 40 credits in English Literature can study either:
(a) 40 credits of optional modules, 20 credits per semester at least 20 credits of research project modules must be taken in the other half of the programme)
(b) Extended Essay in English Literature (20 credits) and 20 credits of optional modules.
It is not possible to take more than one English Literature Special Subject from a particular block.

Students choosing to study 40 credits in English Language can study
(a) Language Investigation (20 credits) and 20 credits of optional modules.
(b) 40 credits of optional modules, 20 credits per semester (at least 20 credits of research project modules must be taken in the other half of the programme).
English Language optional modules
An indicative list of optional modules available is provided below:
Students may also apply to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H. If successful this will be taken in place of one of their semester 1 taught modules. The placement can be taken either during the summer vacation (part-time or full-time) or during semester 1 (part-time only). The placement must be completed prior to the Christmas vacation.
Students who undertook a Professional Skills module at level I will not be able to undertake a Professional Skills module at level H.
Students who have taken LI 37673 Sustainable Development: Climate, Culture, Society and Policy cannot take the LH version of this module.
