Description This is the first of a series of community based medicine modules running throughout the course. It consists of 8 study days spread across the academic year. Its purpose is to provide students with an initial insight into the nature of medical practice, an understanding of the nature of communities and an opportunity to apply some of the theoretical concepts being taught in other modules. Using a variety of interactive teaching methods, it gives students an opportunity to develop skills including group working, reflective learning, professional communication, interviewing patients and to practise a range of clinical skills. The structure of this module enables it to link with the content of the revised Biological Science and Medicine in Society programmes. It has a particular focus on 'similarities and differences' amongst individuals within a population.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to: 1. Elicit a history and other psycho-social information from patients with a prescribed range of clinical conditions using appropriate communication skills. 2. Access and interpret information from a range of sources, including the patient and published literature. 3. Perform the procedure, explain the clinical relevance and the health and safety considerations for a specified range of clinical skills. 4. Recognise their developing professional role and responsibilities in the context of the relationships between the doctor, patient and other members of the Primary Care team. 5. Relate clinical experience with patients to basic science, psycho-social perspectives, ethico-legal considerations and epidemiological principles.
