Description
The module consists of a laboratory based project involving original research, usually chosen at the end of the second year from titles and brief descriptions supplied by supervisors. Typically projects last for 2 semesters, culminating in the submission of a poster in the last week of the second semester and a dissertation submitted after the Easter holiday. Training in required skills and guidance are provided by one or more supervisors, according to their specific expertise. The aims of the final year research project are to:
develop critical thinking and research skills
develop methods of scientific enquiry
become proficient time managers
employ initiative
communicate findings
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Read, review and appraise original research articles effectively
Write an appropriate project plan and protocol
Design suitable experiments
Use appropriate expertise to obtain results.
Identify problems and attempt to generate solutions to resolve these problems
Produce reliable results
Analyse and present results appropriately
Write clearly and concisely in a scientific style
