Description This project provides students with the opportunity to undertake an individual research project or study, with the aim of acquiring new information and/or data to test a hypothesis. This can be in the context of ‘wet’ laboratory based projects, or 'dry' (i.e. questionnaire based, data analysis, or a biomedical business plan-based project).

This is a complex, multistep process, and the project provides training in identifying a hypothesis, designing a research approach and evaluating the available literature / data on the topic. Students will be expected to acquire technical / analytical skills, interpret data and present the results in an appropriate written format.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to:
  • Conduct a detailed study of the literature to define precise research questions and the investigative approaches to be used
  • Design and organise research, including the identification of a hypothesis and aims of the study, and the scale and research approach(es) to be used.
  • Acquire technical and/or analytical skills.
  • Know how to overcome problems / adopt an alternative approach when the research conducted does not fit with prediction.
  • Collect, record, analyse and interpret data
  • Integrate new data into existing knowledge and formulate new ideas
  • Present results and ideas in an appropriate written format.
Assessment 00481-01 : Overall module mark : Dissertation (100%)
Assessment Methods & Exceptions Written dissertation and assessment of laboratory/research performance (Semester 2).
