Description
This module gives the student the opportunity to study in depth a topic of Mathematical science that particularly interests them. The module should give students an idea of mathematical research and teaches key mathematical research and communication skills, including oral presentation of advanced material and small group teaching skills to first year undergraduates or (exceptionally) some other mathematical science.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to; Show the ability to read and understand statistical texts, demonstrate an in- depth understanding of some area of statistics and have a better perspective on the subject at research level; use appropriate computer packages (if any); typeset a general mathematical document of a simple nature in (La)TeX; write and typeset more specialised reports associated with the project topic; search for references and other materials relevant to the project using library, internet and other appropriate tools; produce a properly referenced mathematical document; give oral presentations of a technical nature at an appropriate level; communicate basic mathematical ideas to first year students in demonstration classes and supervisions; mark and comment constructively on written mathematics produced by first year students.
Dissertation: technical content 35%; development, execution & conclusions 24%; presentation of dissertation and 2 x interim reports 18%; 2 x oral presentations 15%; demonstrating & small group teaching 8%
