This module examines issues relating to policy and management within health systems in developed countries, in general, and within the UK NHS. In particular it provides an introduction to key-concepts relating to this area of study which can then be followed up in greater detail in optional modules. Topics include: Governance & Management; Population Health and Inequalities; Finance and Commercialisation; Performance Management; Workforce; Culture; and Technology and Digital.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically engage with the complex range of tasks faced and roles undertaken by health care managers
Demonstrate an understanding and application of key concepts regarding the organisation, funding and provision of health care services and appraise their implications across different social and economic contexts
Critically analyse concepts of strategic planning and how to set priorities as part of the strategic planning process.
Synthesise and critically analyse evidence sources to support health management decision making including health inequalities, performance management, workforce planning and digital health
Synthesise and critically analyse population health needs and requirements including public involvement, strategic commissioning, and service integration.
Critically explore and evaluate the leadership and management in achieving large scale change across health systems.
