Description This module is one of eight similar modules, seven of which constitute the first year programme, with the eighth running alongside clinical experience in the second year. The PBL approach enables students to reframe and elaborate their existing learning while achieving deep learning of new concepts. The cases used will require students to learn about concepts from the biological and non-biological sciences in application to medicine, building an enhanced and relevant science base from which to begin the development of clinical skills. This module will cover the nutrients required by the body, their sources and their roles in maintenance and growth. It will cover cellular metabolism and the way in which the digestive system makes nutrients available and enables the disposal of waste products. It will also look at the social and psychological aspects of food and its consumption.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate learning in relation to the biological and integrated health science issues raised during the module that contributes to their achievement of the detailed outcomes for the year.? The renal and urinary system: function and dysfunction? The endocrine system and metabolism? Normal and abnormal gut function? Liver function and dysfunction? Growth and development: What do we mean by normal? ? Nutrition, obesity and body image. ? The role of social services in cases of neglect/abuse.

2. Demonstrate application of prior learning to the issues under consideration in this module and the effective assimilation of new learning in relation to medicine and its supporting disciplines.

3. Demonstrate a sense of responsibility for their own learning that will support their continuing academic and professional development.

4. Recognise the value of co-operative group learning and demonstrate a willingness to share their own knowledge, experience and insights with other members of their learning group.
