The module examines the development of Citizenship as a concept and a curriculum subject. Students will develop their knowledge of the debates surrounding citizenship through an evaluation of research, government publications and other writings in this area. Students will identify challenges to the teacher's role through an exploration of classroom conflict, multiculturalism and educational aims. Consideration will be given to related concepts of Political Systems, Human Rights, Children's Rights and Global Citizenship.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Evaluate the importance of Citizenship in the contemporary curriculum;
Analyse the political and educational values which underpin this curriculum;
Relate discussion of Citizenship to broader issues of rights and respectabilities;
Examine the pedagogical implications of implementation of the citizenship curriculum.

Assessment: Essay (1,500 words) 50%; Blog (1,500 words) 50% Reassessment: Resubmission of the failed component where the overall module mark is less than the pass mark.
