The purpose of the module is to lead students to an understanding of the way in which linguistic theory is applied to the field of language teaching, especially foreign and second-language teaching. Although the module does not provide a recognised qualification in TESOL, it provides a thorough introduction to the theory underlying the subject and gives students an opportunity to relate their theoretical knowledge to pedagogic practice by including an element of fieldwork and data analysis. Topics include: differences between first and second-language learning; variation in language learning ability, eg social and cultural, as well as individual factors such as personality and intelligence; interlanguage; the meaning of errors; differences between languages and communicative competence.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Demonstrate a good understanding of the main theoretical issues and current debates in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching
Demonstrate awareness of a range of key literature to support theoretical claims and use this literature to compare specific approaches to language teaching.
Conduct observation and appraisal of English lessons, apply theory to evaluate the effectiveness of materials and approach.
Apply what they have learned to the planning of lessons, classroom materials and curricula, demonstrating an understanding of how these reflect underlying theoretical positions.
