This course will familiarize students with 18th-century counterpoint techniques through the study of major repertoire and the writing of a variety of small forms. The course will conclude with writing of a larger Baroque form, such as a fugue or a chorale prelude. An emphasis will be placed on practical compositional skills. This course is suitable for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of counterpoint as well as developing their practical writing skills, and is particularly suitable for composers.

By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Display knowledge of 18th-century contrapuntal techniques
Reproduce basic harmonic/structural procedures in their own compositions after detailed harmonic and structural analysis of Baroque music.
Assessment: 40%: 2-part composition in Baroque style (dance form; approx. 24-32 bars) 60%: 3-part composition in Baroque style (polyphonic form; at least two pages if written for a keyboard). reassessment: failed component only
