Community based medicine is a module delivered by GPs across the W Midlands, students attend 4 full days per semester for on site learning at the GP surgery or off site learning facilitated by the GP tutor.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
Elicit a basic history using effective communication skills with patients to gather information on clinical and psycho-social issues.
Identify and evaluate information from patient history, clinical and other appropriate sources to identify simple problems and appropriate investigations and treatments.
Perform the procedure (or describe the procedure of the more invasive clinical skills), explain the clinical relevance and the health and safety considerations for a specified range of clinical skills.
Evaluate their developing professional role and responsibilities in the context of the relationships between the doctor, patient and other members of the Primary Care team.
Relate clinical experience with patients to basic science, psycho-social perspectives, ethico-legal considerations and epidemiological principles.
Demonstrate a sense of responsibility for their own learning that will support their continuing academic and professional development.
Recognise the value of co-operative group learning and demonstrate a willingness to share their own knowledge, experience and insights with other members of their learning group.
Demonstrate a developing level of personal awareness and interpersonal skill that will allow them to function effectively in various roles in their learning group and to interact appropriately with patients and other health professionals.
Submission of Reflective Proforma 2 in Feb / March Semester 2, 1000 words based on a patient interaction comprising 50% of total mark for module 50% by MCQ/vSAQ written paper
