Description
The lectures provide theoretical background and an understanding of contexts within which basic life support might be required. The skills sessions use mannequins on which student develop their life support skills. There is a requirement from the General Medical Council that medical students are able to respond appropriately to medical emergencies including the provision of first aid, and an expectation from the general public that all healthcare students working in clinical areas will have the skill to act appropriately with the medical team in resuscitation procedures. Providing training early in the programme is an important signifier of medical student professional responsibility and enhances their confidence in early clinical experience and provides early contact with fellow student healthcare professionals.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
provide basic life support in the community or in a healthcare setting;
provide basic life support in an approved manner, taking account of both the patient’s and their own safety.
