Description This is the second of a series of Community Based Medicine modules running throughout the course. It consists of 8 study days spread across the academic year. Its purpose is to continue to develop student understanding of the nature of medical practice and of communities and an opportunity to apply some of the theoretical concepts being taught in other modules. Using a variety of interactive teaching methods, it gives students an opportunity to develop skills including group working, reflective learning, professional communication, interviewing patients and to practise a range of clinical skills.
The structure of this module enables it to link with the content of the revised Biological Science and Medicine In Society programmes.
Learning Outcomes By the end of the module the student should be able to:
  • Elicit a basic history using effective communication skills with patients to gather information on clinical and psycho-social issues.
  • Identify and evaluate information from patient history, clinical and other appropriate sources to identify simple problems and appropriate investigations and treatments
  • Perform the procedure (or describe the procedure of the more invasive clinical skills), explain the clinical relevance and the health and safety considerations for a specified range of clinical skills
  • Evaluate their developing professional role and responsibilities in the context of the relationships between the doctor, patient and other members of the Primary Care team.
  • Relate clinical experience with patients to basic science, psycho-social perspectives, ethico-legal considerations and epidemiological principles.
